ACWA Power, a Saudi Arabian energy company, has formalized partnerships with several international organizations to establish a green hydrogen and renewable energy export framework between Saudi Arabia and Europe. The agreements were finalized in Riyadh during a workshop attended by Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, the Minister of Energy, along with officials from Saudi Arabia, Greece, France, and Germany, as well as representatives from global enterprises.
This initiative is part of Saudi Arabia’s strategy to diversify its energy portfolio and affirm its position as a dependable energy supplier on the global stage. The agreements align with the Kingdom’s participation in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) project, which aims to enhance regional energy cooperation.
Among the key developments is a multi-party Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with European firms including Edison S.p.A., TotalEnergies Renewables SAS, Zhero Europe B.V., and EnBW. This MoU focuses on assessing the feasibility of large-scale renewable energy projects in Saudi Arabia that would facilitate electricity exports to Europe.
In addition, ACWA Power has secured individual MoUs with technical partners such as CESI, Prysmian, GE Vernova, Siemens Energy, and Hitachi. These agreements aim to improve the reliability and functionality of cross-border energy systems.
A notable Joint Development Agreement with EnBW will foster collaboration on the Yanbu Green Hydrogen Hub, which is projected to commence operations by 2030. This facility will integrate renewable electricity generation, desalination, and an export terminal to cater to the increasing global demand for clean energy.
These agreements highlight Saudi Arabia’s strategic importance in the IMEC project and its advantages in renewable energy due to its geographic location and resources. Furthermore, they support the objectives outlined in Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks to elevate global energy security and promote the transition to sustainable energy sources.
